The primary users were nurses and our research showed that they preferred to have a "non-clinical" screen to work from each day.

So I designed purple daisies, red roses and dolphins, and gave the nurses the ability to customize their screens.
This added a human touch that was very successful.
Others users could choose simple graphics and colors.

Creating these preferences was no easy task.
To us each color and value has a meaning in the overall visual hierarchy that we create onscreen. It is critical to manage the user's attention and guide their eye in a system as complex as the USPI interface and to do that we need to use all the power of graphic design.
Creating variations of the interface, and not losing the ability to help them focus on what is essential during their work, can be demanding work.
