3 principles
There are three main principles that underlie, support and guide our work. They guide us by helping to keep in mind what is important, by reminding of what is the real relationship between the natural and the urban environments and by providing a perspective on our continuing research into the power of color:
1. the urban/human environment
if we talk about an urban/human environment instead of just an urban environment it is easier to stay focused on an important principle:
creating or altering an environment has the intention of creating beneficial effects for the human inhabitants..
All our efforts are directed to this single goal;
2. the natural environment
it may appear that the urban environment (greatly affected by man) and the natural environment (not greatly affected by man) stand opposed or on opposite ends of a continuum. Actually, the urban environment always exists within, supported by and in relation to, the natural environment. Every city eventually reaches the countryside, the forest, the mountains or ocean and every city is affected by the weather and the seasons. Also every city is illuminated by the sun and the moon.
Our efforts to use color consciously for beneficial effects always consider the effect of the natural environment on the inhabitants, the local cultures, the structures, the surfaces and the spaces of the urban/human environment;
3. the power of color
just as the perception of color varies among ethnic and cultural groups, beliefs about the power of color vary. Beliefs about the power of color range from color as a preference, to color has an inherent power to effect human well being.
We believe that color has a very great power, perhaps even an inherent power, and we hold this belief because we have seen the power of color demonstrated in our work and the work of others.
Our third principle is that color has power that can be consciously used in our urban/human environments to create beneficial effects.
